While not a complete treatment of the issue, this article by Charles Leiter is a great place to begin your study of the miraculous gifts of the Spirit. He observes that most Christians have fallen into the error of extremism. They either believe that the miraculous gifts are gone from the church forever, or they believe that the modern church should be as miracle-saturated as the apostolic church. Charles then shows that neither extreme is biblical. Instead, the Bible teaches the continuation of miraculous gifts until the return of Christ, but also that the commonality of these gifts will differ across history, and from place to place, according to the will of God.
